Sociologist Ray Oldenburg introduced the concept of “third places”—social environments separate from home (first place) and work (second place) that are essential for community building and civic engagement.  Coffee shops have historically served this role, providing informal public spaces where people gather, converse, and foster relationships. In Parkrose, where options for such communal spaces have been limited, the arrival of Parkrose Coffee Shop fills a vital need.

The Spark Behind the Brew: Historic Parkrose’s Spark Loan Fund

The establishment of Parkrose Coffee Shop was made possible in part by the Parkrose Spark Loan Fund, an initiative by Historic Parkrose. This program offers interest-free loans to support small businesses in the Parkrose district, aiming to stimulate economic growth and foster community development.  The loan provided the necessary capital for the coffee shop to renovate its space, purchase equipment, and launch operations.

Beyond serving quality coffee and pastries, Parkrose Coffee Shop is designed as a community hub. The owners, Lily Burnett and Peter Irby, envisioned a space where neighbors could gather, local artists could showcase their work, and community events could take place.
